About Northside Carpet & Oriental Rugs
Cleaning Carpets Since the 1900s
Northside Carpet has been on the Northside of Pittsburgh since 1900. Back then, we were proud to offer direct service via a chain-drawn truck, one of the first of its kind serving the Pittsburgh area. This style of truck was durable and lightweight, perfect for traversing the road conditions and hilly terrain of the Pittsburgh area.
Early in our history, our representatives traveled to customers' homes via horse drawn buggy or coach, cleaning carpets using an air compression method and screens to sift the dirt from the carpet. This was a tedious process, performed completely by hand.
The expanded urban development and growth in population in the early 1900s provided increased demand for custom carpet cleaning services by Northside Carpet Cleaning Company, resulting in the need for an expanded facility to support the transition and expansion of services being offered. In 1928 we moved to our current location at 1001 Constance Street, just blocks from the facility currently occupied by Penn Brewing.
We've spent years developing our unique multi-step cleaning process and services provided by our staff of expert craftspeople, master weavers, and highly experienced service technicians. This is all part of our family atmosphere, featuring multiple generations of family members working here at Northside Carpet.
2000 and Beyond
In the year 2000, readers of Pittsburgh Magazine named Northside Carpet Cleaning Company the Best O’ the ‘Burgh for Oriental Carpet Cleaning.
In addition to being recognized for our excellence in service, the year 2000 also marked the celebration of a century of providing carpet cleaning services to the tri state region and across the United States, from our Pittsburgh landmark building, located on the Northside of Pittsburgh.
Owner Ken Ashtari and staff of experts bring over 80 years of experience to your carpet project. Our staff is highly trained and motivated to focus their time and talents to each and every carpet. Ken, Hilary and our staff work directly with you. There’s never a need to bring in outside consultants.
In 2014, we opened a second location on Murray Avenue in Squirrel Hill, conveniently serving our customers east of the city. And in 2018, we opened our third location, on Castle Shannon Blvd. in Mt. Lebanon. Stop in for the expert cleaning and repair services you've come to expect from Northside, and stay to view our beautiful selection of new and antique rugs. We are now Northside Carpet & Oriental Rugs.
Steelers Banner – Unique Fabric Care
For over a century, our company has been located on the Northside of Pittsburgh. This has always been a geographically convenient location for our customers, and for us, with easy access to interstate and beltways. So, when we were called upon to pick up and clean a unique eight-foot Steeler football banner that had been on display at Three Rivers Stadium for an extended period of time, we were pleased to have the opportunity.
The size of the banner and its unique mix of woven fabric and leather swatches made the project both unique and challenging. Not to let the home team and fans of Pittsburgh down, we quickly evaluated the project, and activated our team of experts. Taking great care, a thorough hand washing and drying process was the perfect solution. For many years after, the banner proudly waved at Three Rivers Stadium.
Oversized Heirloom Carpet – Restoration and Cleaning
By far the largest project we have had to date, this 19-foot by 38-foot carpet was in need of both repair and cleaning. In addition to being a very unique and large size, the carpet was an irreplaceable heirloom piece, appraised at an extremely high monetary value, and valued even greater by the owners.
The size created many challenges, beginning with the staff size needed to transport and work with this vintage carpet of historic significance. We took great care and time to repair the damage to the carpet, including hand woven repairs to areas in need, along with replacement of worn and tethered bindings.
A carpet of that size required extended hours and expanded staff to accomplish the hand cleaning and drying process. The project was successfully accomplished, including delivery and placed back on display at its original home.
